The semester is drawing to an end and we have been super busy in the TLC. We enjoyed a party with food and fellowship last week for all the students. This week is finals so everyone is cramming; finishing up that last paper and getting ACCESS submitted. Enjoy the photos and if you haven't been to the center please drop by next semester for a visit and/or some assistance with your technology needs!

Talking with an Instructor

Sherry Whitten is the director of the College and Career Planning Center at Northeast. Sherry is also an instructor in our Office Administration program. She teaches one class a semseter. I recently spoke with  Sherry about her use of the WIMBA Collaboration tools within her class. This is what she had to say:

"I have used WIMBA for the last three years. WIMBA is a great feature for an instructor's toolbox. Online students are able to see and hear our lectures just like they are in the classroom. Currently, I use WIMBA in my OAD 101 Beginning Keyboarding class. Students watch my presentation entitled "Creating a Signature Line with Your Email Account". The presentation is only five minutes long but walks students through the simple process. For this presentation, I use the audio portion and show the computer screen shots. I use this same presentation each semester and this saves me so much time. Also, the student is less frustrated because they have a "How-to"guide to watch at their convenience.
If I am teaching a lecture class online, I also use WIMBA. I will use the audio and video to tape my lectures. This allows online students to feel like they are part of the class and are connected with others. They see and hear me present the material which makes a difference in the understanding of the subject matter.
WIMBA is very user friendly and I would encourage other instructors to experiment with the program."

If you are an instructor and would like to learn more about WIMBA please contact me in the Technology Learning Center. If you are a student and your instructor is using WIMBA please let me know how you have used it as an added learning resource. If your instructors are not using WIMBA and you would like for them too please let me know and I will work with them to assist in offering these resources to your class.

September Happenings

September started off with a party in the TLC as we celebrated Daniels' birthday along with one of our faithful students to the center, Tyler. We had cake and ice cream along with pizza from Pizza Hut. Thanks to the Rainsville Pizza Hut for the great discount. If you are a NACC student drop by and thank them for always helping us by offering great discounts.

We were busy leading technology training workshops as adjuncts finish up their 10 hours of technology training in compliance with our Title III grant. We have offered over 10 hours of training during the month of September. On the 29th instructors may come to the TLC for one on one training and assistance with any technology questions or concerns they may have.

We will end the month on Friday, the 30th with a SEC Football Pizza Party. Wear your team colors and come by the center at 11:00 for FREE lunch. The teams playing are:

Out with the old and in with the New!

In July Judith Lea, Director of The Technology Learning Center at Northeast Alabama community college and Brent Satterfield, Criminal Justice Instructor attended and presented at Blackboard World 2011 in Las Vegas, NV.

Judith and Brent presented on behalf of NBC Learn. NBC Learn is the educational arm of NBC News and has over 12,000 digitized stories available on demand for teachers and students. Judith and Brent’s presentation was entitled “Ensuring Reliable Sources”. With students on digital information overload Northeast ensures students another reliable source for research by offering the NBC Learn tool via the Blackboard course management system. Judith and Brent also presented at Athens State at the 2nd Annual ACCS eLearning Symposium on this same topic.

BbWorld® brings together clients from around the globe using all Blackboard solutions. This is the premier training, networking and professional development event for Blackboard users. BbWorld® aims to bring together the community's most vital and resourceful group of teaching and learning innovators

August gave us the end of summer semester and another school year as well as the beginning of fall semester and a new school year. We began the month with proctoring finals. Classes ended on the 5th with finals to follow. There was a one day break between summer and fall for faculty so we stayed busy the entire month. We held two days of training on the 10th and 11th offering nine sessions with 65 faculty members attending.

We upgraded the Blackboard course management system to the new 9.1 and conducted on campus previews of two new Blackboard technologies. Blackboard Connect is the leader in mass notification services for education and government. The Blackboard Connect service gives you the ability to reach your community in minutes—whether it is a time-sensitive situation, event outreach, or attendance notification. It is the most efficient way to keep your campus or community more secure, informed, and involved. We also previewed Blackboard Student Services which helps colleges and universities meet the daily, weekly, and monthly peaks in demand for real-time response through virtualized staff and infrastructure specializing in: e-Learning Support Services; Student Lifecycle Management Services such as enrollment management; financial aid; retention; and student accounts as well as offering IT helps desk support services. The director of the TLC participated in a Blackboard Suggestion Squad using the elements of Behind the Blackboard support portal and began a twelve week class on Blackboard Collaborate. Blackboard Collaborate will be replacing the current course capture tool used by the college; WIMBA.

At the end of the day on August 31st the TLC had seen 460 students for the month. This is a new record!

Summer in the Center

As you can see from the picture we have been busy. Summer in the center has been great. During the month of June we provided assistance to 365 students. It seems Tuesday and Thursday are the busiest days. I guess for summer more students enrolled in Tuesday/Thursday classes so they could have a four day weekend with Friday-Monday.

We have been blessed to have two work-study/tutors in Ben and Amber. Ben has worked Tuesdays and Thursdays and Amber works Monday and Wednesday. I'm here alone most Fridays with the exception of Daniel and Diana; our faithful two students that work almost everyday.

If you haven't been to the center or taken advantage of the tutoring assistance we offer drop on by.
 Summer hours are:
Monday/Wednesday: 7:30AM-7:00 PM
Tuesday/Thursday: 7:30AM-8:00 PM
Friday: 7:30-noon

We are located in the Business Education Building Room 107. See you there!

Changes

May has brought so many changes to our lives. With the tornados the last week of April we ended the semester in much the way we began; with the college closed.  With electricity out in much of our service area as well as the college we were unable to return to school until Tuesday the 3rd. Classes were extended, finals were rescheduled and a new normal became a part of our lives.

We are all victims of the storm. Whether we lost something as small as electricity; the food in our refrigerator and freezer; trees in our yard; the roof of our house; damage to a family members home; our  home;  a member of our family or friend; we all lost something.

As we are reminded in Psalm 46, God is our refuge and strength—He dwells in his city, does marvelous things, and says, Be still and know that I am God.

I pray everyone is recovering from the affects of the storm and that summer comes soon and brings us all light and goodness (Ephesians 5:9)

And the winner is......

The Northeast Technology Learning Center recently held a drawing for an iTunes Gift Card. In order to be eligible for the drawing students had to log study hours in the TLC during the month of March. Three hundred and eighty-two students visited the center and logged study hours in a three week time frame. The drawing was held on Friday, April 1st in the center. Daniel McAnally was the winner of the gift card. Daniel is an English major taking sixteen hours this semester. He is a daily visitor to the technology center where he can set up his laptop and study; or use one of the workstations in the center for research. Shown is Daniel and Judith Lea; Director of the center.

The Technology Learning Center is located in the Business Education Building Room 107

2nd installment of Listening to our Students

2. What is the most useful feature of BlackBoard?
The most useful thing about blackboard is that I can take my classes online. Taking classes online can be beneficial because you can do your work on your own time and you can also do it at home without driving to the school which saves money by using less gas.

The Assignment manager is a quick and easy way to turn in assignments. You just click the link, attach your file and submit it. It is very convenient if you have a busy life style.

The most useful item on Black Board is the teachers Syllabus and Course Information. I may forget about something I can just go to Black Board and see what it is that I have forgotten

That I can send questions thru email directly from blackboard

Tools because everything you need is right there under one tab

The most useful feature of Blackboard is the box on the home page with my courses. I can navigate to anything I need to see by clicking on the appropriate course and viewing anything available regarding the course. Another useful tool on Blackboard is the discussion board. The discussion board makes it easy to talk to classmates and help each other.

I think the discussion board is the most useful for me. It makes it easy to communicate with my class mates and teachers

The most useful thing about blackboard would be how we can check our grades right there on blackboard. I like how all our grades are right at our fingertips.

The most useful feature about Blackboard for me is the online testing. The "real" time test results lets everyone know how well (or how poorly) the test went without having to worry for a week while the Professor grades the papers.

Having all my classes listed together

The most useful feature of blackboard is after you click on what your course is, it shows you what tasks that you have to do,this is especially useful for someone that is very forgetful because it just POPS UP and reminds you.

I think the most useful feature of BB is the discussion board, it allows for communicating with peers and teachers because with an online class you do not have the opportunity to collaborate in person about ideas and topics regarding a specific subject.

The discussion board b/c when you have problems you can post your questions on there and classmates will try to help you out

I think the most useful feature of BB is the discussion board, it allows for communicating with peers and teachers because with an online class you do not have the opportunity to collaborate in person about ideas and topics regarding a specific subject.

Listening to our Students Series

At Northeast we care what our students think. As part of our Instructor Testimonial Mr. Jay Massey decided to use his time to conduct a survey of CIS146 students with questions concerning Blackboard. During March I will be posting some answers from those questions. Thanks Jay!

BlackBoard: From a Student’s Point of View?

As instructors here at Northeast we rely on BlackBoard for much of our instruction. We may use it heavily for online classes, and to a lesser extend for classes that meet. We work to explore BlackBoard and what it offers in order to provide our students with a well-developed learning tool. As instructor’s we each have certain likes and dislikes related to BlackBoard. We may prefer to have exams taken in class but homework may be submitted through BlackBoard. We may provide a syllabus that details the entire semester or it may be a week by week affair. We each have our own point of view as it relates to BlackBoard. Well, students are no different…

Following are the results of a four question survey taken by CIS146 students. The questions were open ended allowing the students to answer in any way they chose and expound on their answers. It should be noted that “all” students are required to take CIS146, so these students make up a pretty good cross section of the student body. These questions were BlackBoard (not course) specific. The results show a few common themes but in some cases the most liked or most useful feature of one student is the least liked or least useful feature of another student!

Take a few minutes and review the student feedback. You may find something interesting that you may want to implement (or avoid implementing) in your courses…I did!

- Jay Massey

1. What do you like most about BlackBoard?

What I like most about Blackboard is that all of my assignments are always posted so that I can look at them whenever I need to. If I happen to miss a class for some reason, I can always go to Blackboard and see the assignments that I missed so that I will not get behind on my work.

What I like most about Blackboard is that I can access it virtually anywhere using my computer or my smartphone, which makes like a little less stressful.

I believe the best part about Blackboard is that you can use it anywhere at any time. If I'm away from home I can pick up any computer and log in to my Blackboard. This is so useful to me.

I like black board because I can do my work when I want and I can turn it in ahead of schedule

What I like most about Blackboard is that you can see which courses you are enrolled in and you can easily view course assignments

This is the first semester I have had to use blackboard, so far I have had no problems with it attaching files has been an easy feature.

What I like most about Blackboard is anything I need to know or want to know I can Logon to Blackboard and the information is there. NO waiting in line to talk to someone, or being put on hold on the phone

The NBC archive feature is what I like most about blackboard. When doing term papers or even having to do an article this feature allows easy access to specific subject matter for quick and easy references.

That I Can Look up To Find My Work And grade And I Can Also See What Is Going on at NACC

I like that I can see all my grades and assignments at any time on Blackboard. I like to keep up with my grades and Blackboard makes it easy to check my grades and the progress I am making towards completing all of the assignments for the semester

Learning tools are in depth and easy to understand. The instructions and lessons are easy to follow

What I like most about Blackboard is seeing all the announcements for all the classes I am enrolled in on the homepage. I think this feature makes it easy to keep track of all the assignments and updates to the courses

I have taken online classes for the past two semesters and it is a great help to my schedule

I like the fact that all of my online classes are conveniently located on this specific website. This keeps me from having to remember different websites and passwords for every different class that I am taking. I also like the fact that it is not difficult to use. I have never attended a Blackboard Orientation; I just logged onto Blackboard and spent an hour or so familiarizing myself with the different tabs and tools enough to breeze through it by the time classes had started.

What I like most about blackboard, is the fact that it allows me to be able to take my classes online.

I like how you can go in and view all of the assignment that you have due along with the due dates. It makes things so smooth and easier.

What I like most about blackboard is how easy it is to get to an assignment. There is no hassle trying to find your assignments or what your next assignment is.

What I like most about blackboard is being able to work on my assignments when Iwant to because I work fulltime.

My favorite thing about blackboard is the fact that it is so easy to find everything. Almost everything is labeled under a certain folder which makes it easy to locate. I also love the fact I can see my grade.

For the instructors that post grades on blackboard, it is very useful and convenient to be able to log in at any time and check my grades. It also helps me personally visualize the hard work that I have put forth or the extra effort I need to put forth to boost a low grade

That I can do my work at home and save on gas

Next Weeks question is: 2.  What is the most useful feature of BlackBoard?

Working Together

This week in the TLC the students are working hard on their CIS146 and CIS147 assignments. Being Microsoft we all know the application software changes almost yearly. The CIS146 students are now working in Office 2010 and the CIS147 students are still working in Office 2007. Since I don't use the application/applications on a daily basis I too sometimes have to read the chapters to be able to assist the students.
Yesterday we had a young lady working on her CIS147 assignments and ask me to assist her. After about 15 minutes I was frustrated. Never fear help was here! A couple of the ILT/INT guys that come to the center regularly were there to assist. After another 15-20 minutes the four of us working together figured it out.  Team Work!
If you haven't been to the technology learning center and need help with some of your assignments, come by. It may take a village but between us all we'll get it worked out. It was fun working on a team to solve the problem. Hope to see you soon. Business Education Building Room 107.

An Instructor's Testimony

The Wimba suite of collaborative learning software has revolutionized the way I approach instruction in my Spanish classes, both on campus and online. I have been able to use these tools through Blackboard in order to free up my class time so that students can practice the language instead of listening to me lecture about the language. These technologies have made my teaching more relevant and accessible to students. The three main components of Wimba that I use are Voice Presentation, Voice Board, and the Wimba Classroom.

I have used the Voice Board in my online classes as an oral discussion board. It provides the students with a platform to speak Spanish in a non-threatening environment, and then they can comment on each other’s posts in Spanish. It is versatile enough that I can also comment on what the students say without other students hearing my comments. That provides an easy way to give students feedback without being put on the spot.

The Voice Presentation tool has changed the way that I conduct oral exams. Before, each student had to sign up for an exam time, come to my office, and agonize over their Spanish in front of the intimidating teacher. Now, using the Voice Presentation portion of Wimba, I can conduct the oral exams with an entire class at the same time. Students are able to enter the Spanish class on Blackboard, enter a Voice Presentation room, and orally respond to different prompts that I give them through web-based content. Students seem to feel more comfortable, and I am actually able to evaluate their speaking abilities in a more authentic manner.

The final portion of the Wimba suite that I want to discuss is my favorite. The Wimba Classroom allows me to conduct both live and recorded class sessions with my students. With Wimba Classroom, you are able to upload PowerPoint presentations, images, and websites into a virtual classroom, and then, you are able communicate with students that have entered the virtual classroom. What is even better is that all of this can be recorded for future use. For my traditional, on-campus classes, I have recorded short 5-10 minute mini-lectures covering the grammar topics that come up during the semester in Spanish. I assign the mini-lectures as homework. Students listen to the mini-lecture at home, and when they get to class, they are ready to practice what they have learned in the mini-lecture. I don’t have to spend class time talking ABOUT Spanish; we can use the time SPEAKING Spanish. Also, I use the Wimba Classroom with my online classes as a review tool. Several times during the semester, I plan evenings in which my online students can “attend” (either on campus or online through Wimba) a review session. After entering the virtual classroom though Blackboard, students can ask me questions, and we are able to review the material together at the same time without being in the same place. For those students that cannot attend, the review sessions are recorded, and they can view the video at their convenience.
